Paying the piper

Forsythia and redbud

The taxes are almost finished. Of all the hateful things I have to do for the business, I detest the federal income tax report the most. Second is the yearly audit of our workman's compensation insurance. I once caught our insurance provider cheating, I and forced them to return nearly $1k that they had stolen over a period of three years. We ended up changing companies, and I caught the new one cheating. Although we received only one small refund from them, they are no longer cheating that I can tell. Small companies like ours that do not use expensive accounting firms seem to be targets for this type of fraud and it is no telling how many millions of dollars these jerks illegally skim from their clients each year. It is no wonder their officers make the big bucks; they are very creative. Vigilance on the part of sole proprietors is our best defense.

It looks like we will probably be close to breaking even with the government this year; which is the best way to go. No use letting the Feds hold on to our money all year just so we can get a refund at years end. For 2007, we were due a decent refund, but I let it remain with uncle sugar to pay 2008's estimated taxes. Our income has gone down so much over the past year that we will have to pay very little estimated taxes in comparison to past years.

We received the new federal tax tables in the mail. On the old ones, the first dollar was deducted from the employee after the initial $100 of gross earnings on each check. Now, no income tax withholdings are made until the $300th dollar earned.

Shot day has rolled around again and I am still feeling pretty good, although the RA is picking up steam a little bit.

This coming weekend's weather is supposed to be decent, and we want to get out for a picnic. Someplace we have never been or not visited in a long time sounds good, but we shall see. I learned a long time ago not to make plans for any particular place as something always comes up to snafu them.

Enough gibberish for this day ...

I like your "gibberish', Ken.

In case of picnic I also think that the best is the free improvisation.

Have a great weekend. :-))
